CORFU

In 2014, I took a particular interest in featuring Corfu in my paintings - I was entranced by the picturesque surroundings of mountains, sea and mist against the painstakingly detailed dollhouse-esque hotels and tourist accommodation. But what particularly drove me to pursue it as a subject was the deteriorating economic climate and how it presented itself through the more rural areas, as sights of graffiti and ruin made pathways during drives to the cities. With the use of layering enamel paint and flat planes, I aimed to present the tourist attractions and intricately designed strings of hotels as their initial form as anatomical constructions and to present the arresting sights of the Grecian natural land as a country in murky uncertainty, unknowing of its future ahead.
